If you are among those who feel that the 8 Series Coupe is a bit… well, stubby… you’re in for a treat. The longer, sleeker, sexier BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe proves that an extra few inches – and superior engineering and design – can go a long way in transforming an already luxurious vehicle into a powerhouse market leader.
The updated BMW Gran Coupe has been teased for the past year. Bimmer finally released photos, and they have proven worth the wait. The new 8 will be a four door version of the current model, and we can best see the shift in proportions on the long fastback roof. The longer wheelbase also facilitates even more smooth and seamless handling.
The 2020 Gran Coupe will ride on the same platform as the 7 Series, the CLAR modular design. Performance stats are impressive: it’ll boast 335 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque in the entry level 840i. An upgrade to the M850i will give you a powerful 4.4 liter twin turbocharged V8, generating 523 hp. An uprated version of the M850i will top 600 hp.
Inside, we’ll be treated to an upscale interior with digital screens, an advanced infotainment hub, seats lined in premium Merino leather with optional contrast stitching, and other BMW-worthy touches.
The 2020 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe runs with the big boys, competing against the Mercedes CLS and AMG GT 4-Door Coupe, the Porsche Panamera, the Audi A7 Sportback, and the Maserati Ghibli. It’ll start at just under $86,000, with the M850i starting at just under $110,000.
