BMW always amazes enthusiasts with its innovative car concepts and models. Like many other automakers, BMW has various solutions to achieve carbon-neutral operations. This can be seen in the launch of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen. After four years of development, the German automaker unveiled the first hydrogen-powered concept. So, what is the BMW iX5 Hydrogen? And how does it work? Read on to learn more.
What is the BMW iX5?
The iX5 BMW is a hydrogen-powered SUV produced for trial and demonstration purposes. When companies strive to achieve clean energy, most turn to battery-electric vehicles over fuel cell technology. However, BMW still believes in a hydrogen-powered fuel cell as a viable alternative. Other manufacturers, including Hyundai, Honda, and Toyota, share the same thoughts with their upcoming FCV models.
Even with the poor infrastructure and pricing of raw materials, BMW has managed to launch the iX5 SUV as a real concept. But it has only produced a handful of models that will hit the road in select regions for testing purposes.
How Does the BMW iX5 Hydrogen Work?
In simple terms, the car converts hydrogen into electricity. It is fitted with two hydrogen tanks that supply the fuel cell with the hydrogen needed to power the vehicle. These tanks can hold a total capacity of around 16 pounds of hydrogen which only takes three to four minutes to fill.
The hydrogen is fed to the fuel cells, which are paired with an electric motor and battery. Therefore, it can be used for long distances with just a few stops.
Features of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen
The concept model is based on the regular X5 but with a high-performance fuel cell and optimized power battery. By combining fuel cell technology with a fifth-generation BMW eDrive, this SUV produces a maximum output of 275 kW/374 hp.
Like in other EVs, the braking phase serves as a generator that feeds power back into the battery. These enhancements ensure that the car continuously runs at maximum efficiency and quickly responds to acceleration. As of now, it can get from zero to 60 mph in about seven seconds and has a travel range of 310 miles.
