NEW BMW PERFORMANCE MODELS IN THE PIPELINE – 2014 X5 M AND X6 M

Currently in the production pipeline and due in the Braman BMW West Palm Beach showroom toward the end of 2014 are the all-new, third-generation X5 M and X6 M performance models. The 2014 BMW X5 M will likely see the light of day in March at the Geneva Motor Show and should go on sale shortly after that.  We haven’t see the X6 yet, just renderings, but it’s expected to make its debut at the 2014 Moscow Auto Show this fall.

Based on information appearing in European enthusiast magazines, the powerplant in the new X5 M and X6 M will be an even more powerful version of the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 found in the current generation.  Currently rated at 555 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque, the uprated version is expected to be even more powerful – somewhere near the 575 horsepower of the latest M5 equipped with its Competition Package.  Performance figures of 0 to 60 mph in fewer than 4.7 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph are expected.

In addition to increased performance, both the X5 M and X6 M should produce increased gas mileage as a result of weight savings from the new chassis and the inclusion of BMW’s engine stop-start system.  As previous spy shots of the X5 M have shown, sharper and more aggressive styling will feature. Key elements will include larger air intakes, an M-style fender detail and quad-exhaust tips, as well as beefy blue brake calipers and a roof-mounted spoiler.

And for diesel fans, you should know that, overseas at least, BMW already offers a high-performance X5 variant called the X5 M50d.  Under the hood is a triple-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six good for 381 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. An X6 M50d should make an appearance shortly after then new generation of the X6 makes its debut, and we can only hope it will make its way to the U.S.
