All-New BMW 2 Series Coupe – Less Rules, More Performance

December 02, 2013

The headline on the BMW web site for the new 2-Series is “Less Rules, More Performance.”  Judging by the list of M options just announced, they’re serious about what they say.  Parts are designed to enhance the drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics and cabin.

The M Performance muffler for the 2-Series reduces exhaust gas pressure and gives the car a sportier sound. The muffler features an M logo and can be ordered with chrome or carbon finishes.  Also available is a limited-slip differential, available only on the 235i. When the car’s stability control is deactivated, the torque-sensitive mechanical limited-slip differential in the rear axle ensures traction-optimized distribution of drive torque between the rear wheels.

The sport-tuned suspension lowers the car by 20 millimetres, as well as sport-tuned shocks and shortened coil springs finished in red.  M Performance brakes with calipers painted in a choice of red, yellow or orange is also available as well as 19-inch light alloy wheels.

Exterior bits include a subtle body kit, as well as a rear spoiler and diffuser, a black decorative grid for the kidney grille, side mirror caps in carbon, sporty side sills with M Performance logo, and body stripes.  Opportunities to customize the interior include an Alcantara and carbon steering wheel, carbon dash trim, steel pedals and M Performance floor mats.

Set to replace the 1-Series in dealer showrooms in the first quarter of 2014, the 2-Series is longer, wider, has more overall interior space, more rear legroom and a slightly larger trunk.  Two models of the 2-Series will be available: 228i, powered by a 240-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and M235i, which has a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that produces 322 horsepower. The M235i will also feature performance-oriented features like an adaptive suspension, upgraded brakes, sport-tuned steering and high-performance tires. Both models are rear-wheel drive and are available with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.
