BMW has made several updates to its midsize sedan for the new model year, the more noticeable changes being a face-lift and a new engine. But updates to the 5-Series BMW aren’t confined to the sedans this year, as BMW is also changing the 5-Series GT hatchback.
The big news for 2014 is the addition of a diesel model to the 5-Series lineup. Only available as a sedan, the 2014 BMW 535d is powered by a 3.0-liter turbodiesel 6-cylinder engine. Some people were a little surprised when finding out this engine produces only 255 horsepower, but they were even more surprised when informed that it delivers 413 lb-ft of torque! This means that the vehicle will feel as if it is going fast, even while cruising at lower speeds in the city.
There were also some updates made to both the exterior and interior of the 5-Series sedan. On the exterior, both the front and rear bumpers have been slightly revised to give the series an updated look. The interior storage units are now larger and the trim areas are accentuated with chrome. Probably the biggest change is the touchpad now included in the 5-Series’ iDrive system. This feature will allow drivers to type instead of using the circular iDrive controller to navigate through the on-screen keyboard.
The 5-door 5-Series GT hatchback also received some updates for 2014. Like its sedan counterpart, the GT will also use the same new touchpad in iDrive. The biggest revisions to the GT can be found on the exterior, including new headlights and taillights and revised front and rear bumpers. The cargo area has also been enlarged for more storage capacity.
